This is it.
This is the end of our May journey of poetry writing.
I’m so grateful for you! Thank you for reading, for sitting in this space with me.
What has it been like for you this month? What are you learning about yourself, about the world?
Even though this series is coming to an end, poetry never does. There will be more poems to come later, and I might surprise my paid subscribers with extra poetry prompts down the road—stay tuned!
I chose all of the prompts we’ve had this month long before we started this journey, so I love that today’s prompt is the word now.
My poem is below. I’ll be taking a little break after this, but can’t wait to get back to more essays this summer.
I’ve heard that phrase
be here now
so many times,
and I forget how
powerful it really is.
Be here now.
Not
be here tomorrow
be here next week
be here later
be here when you can
those just won’t do,
because we sometimes
forget how much it means
to sit still
without the weight
of it all
taking over.
Be here now,
our soul begs.
Be here now,
our kids ask.
Be here now,
our partner sighs.
Be here now,
Mother Nature gently demands.
The power is
now.
It away was.
I've told myself for so long that the words just weren't coming to me, so I kept waiting for inspiration. You helped me find it with just one word a day, and you helped me find words for thoughts I hadn't been able to articulate or planned to share. Reading everyone's poems every day has given me a sense of connection and community that I didn't expect at the beginning. This has been beautiful gift.
Now is not yesterday
It’s not tomorrow
It’s my 5 minutes ago
It’s the meeting in
20 minutes
It’s not the thing I did or
Said that I wish I hadn’t
Yesterday
It’s not what I’m worried might
Happen tomorrow
It’s not even my next breath
It’s this breath.
And now this breath
