Hello friends,
Before we jump into today’s prompt, I want to celebrate something with you. My dear friend Amy Paulson came by last weekend to take photos of me and my family.
The last time I had photos taken of myself was at least four years ago, and a lot can change in four years! In many ways, I am the healthiest I’ve ever been (partly thanks to this truly special space) and I know myself better than I ever have.
So, here’s to honoring our journey, giving ourselves space to ask questions, and saying yes to the things that bring us life, like writing poetry.
I’m giving you a sneak peek of one of my favorite photos from our session, sitting in my office where so much of the magic of words happens.
Thank you, again, for being here.
Now, onto the poetry!
Today’s word is disruption.
Disruption finds us in so many ways.
One day, my train of thought was disrupted
and I lost whatever I needed to say, to write.
It felt devastating, as silly as it is to say it—
disruption can devastate us.
Another day,
disruption pulls me from the constant work
and stress
to play with my children,
to walk my dogs,
to take a much needed breath.
Disruption destroys our progress
and saves us from the worst of ourselves.
We can both thank it
and curse it
all at once, because
that’s the way it is,
the way it’s always been.
Even now, I disrupt this poem
to flip a crepe that’s about to burn,
to pause the flow of words
to embrace the kind sustenance
of a simple, beautiful dinner.
Disrupted,
interrupted,
saved—
right now, it’s all the same.
The night before we traveled
for our first vacation since covid
I broke my toe.
This disrupted our plans.
And yet…
instead of visiting museums
and historical sites,
we sat in the B&B garden
drinking our coffee and tea
for hours
and caught up with each other
and remembered, rekindled
the love we share
expressing it
receiving it
treasuring it
resting our hearts in it.
I’m so grateful for the disruption
that led us
to restore our souls.
Enter your own belonging
And look around
-
Find the hearth of your soul
And sit for a while
-
Take what the world expects
And just say no.
