It’s the day after Indigenous Peoples Day, when we remind the world that as Indigenous people we are still here, still existing, still resisting, still surviving and thriving, still healing and embodying, still grieving and making a way forward.
And, of course, we are still creating.
Lately, I’m reading multiple books at once to prepare for my own book (coming out 2023!), which means I’ve been flooded with inspiration, and I’d like to share that with you!
So, here are 15 books for the struggle—words by incredible authors that point us to the work of embodying solidarity, love and care in the exhausting time we are living in.
See No Stranger by Valarie Kaur
Unsettling the Word edited by Steve Heinrichs
Jesus and John Wayne by Kristin Kobes Du Mez
All We Can Save edited by Ayana Elizabeth Johnson & Katharine K Wilkinson
Ladder to the Light by Bishop Steven Charleston
The Land is Not Empty by Sarah Augustine
Women Who Run With the Wolves by Dr. Clarissa Pinkola Estés
The Deconstructionists Playbook edited by Crystal Cheatham & Theresa Ta
Pleasure Activism by adrienne maree brown
As We Have Always Done by Leanne Betasamosake Simpson
Braiding Sweetgrass by Robin Wall Kimmerer
100 Things I Love About Me by Tanaya Winder
On the Spectrum by Daniel Bowman Jr.
Each of these books has taught me something about myself and about humanity. They have reminded me of perspectives that are not my own and have instilled in me that I truly mean it when I say I believe in Us. I believe in the world we are working to create today, a world that we hope will be better for future generations.
So grab a few of these books and see where they take you. Embark on the journey of practicing solidarity and see what it awakens in you. See what it awakens in the world.
Onward.
